Custom Guitars

Both Trey and Mike have been using custom guitars made by Paul Languedoc for most of their professional careers, though more recently Mike has favored using a Modulus bass guitar. Trey, on the other hand, continues to use Paul's guitars in his solo career following the break up of Phish in 2004.

  1. Trey's first guitar was a white Ibanez electric of unknown model.
  2. Trey began using a guitar made by Time Guitars, where Paul Languedoc was employed at the time.
  3. "Old Reliable" is a white/light blonde colored hollowbody that debuted in 1987 and was the first custom guitar made by Paul Languedoc for Trey. The body was made from a combination of padauk, spruce and walnut. It was Trey's main guitar until 1996. It has a headstock inlay feature Trey's dog Marley as a puppy with a caption bubble that says "Who's the Mar-Mar?" It originally had a single pickup in the middle, but that was later removed and the whole covered with plastic when two pickups were installed.

During this time period, another custom hollowbody was built by Languedoc, this one with an inlay of Marley chasing a cat with the caption "I'm the Mar-Mar!". This was Trey's backup and was rarely used live.
  5. The third Languedoc guitar has a flame koa body and features a bronze nut and saddles instead of bone. According to Languedoc, this guitar has "the most brilliant sound" of the three instruments. This guitar has been used by Trey in virtually all live appearances since 1997, though it was seen live as early as The Clifford Ball. "Trey is a one guitar guy," says Languedoc (source of this quote unknown).
  6. In about 1999, a new, fourth koa was made for Trey, this one slightly darker. It was used sparingly in 1999/2000 but was used regularly during the hiatus and exclusively since.
  7. There have been a few other sightings of guitars that Trey has used, including an emerald green model during the April 11, 2004 get-together in Winooski, Vermont. This guitar belongs to Page, which is different than the one Mike also has been known to use on occasion. It is unknown whether Fish has his own Languedoc.
  8. One guitar that Trey has been known to use, although not with Phish, is the Matterhorn, which is a one of a kind guitar crafted by Trey's friend Trow Cottrell. It was seen during the 2001 Oysterhead Tour. It's unique feature is the inclusion of antlers in the design, which are armed with sensors that Trey can manipulate to make some amazing sounds.
